Chartered Institute of Building Technical Achitecture in Barcelona (Cateb) is founding member de la asociación internacional ECO Platform and the DAPconstruction® Operator Programme, managed by Cateb, is accredited to issue environmental declarations with the ECO Platform EPD EN 15804 VERIFIED™ logo.
ECO Platform is an international organisation, established on 4 June 2013, which brings together all European EPD or Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) operators in the construction sector, including the Spanish EPD® Construction Programme of the Barcelona College of Technical Architecture (CATEB).
The ECO Platform organization aims to integrate Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for buildings and infrastructure by providing reliable product data in an affordable and effective way.
The organization promotes the use of verified, product-specific environmental information —especially Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)—as preferred data for performing LCAs in construction. Where specific data are not available, generic data are essential in the early design phases or in neutral evaluations. ECO Platform works to ensure consistency between both types of data and aims to establish an open international digital network for LCA data in building and construction.
Product-specific data in the form of verified environmental information for construction products, in particular type III declarations called EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations), are preferred as data entry for building and construction LCAs. To close missing data gaps, in early design stages or product-neutral evaluations, generic data is required. ECO Platform seeks consistency across both categories of data. The aim is to establish an open international digital data network for building and construction LCA data.
To achieve the overall objectives, the ECO Platform sets out four main related points:
- LCA Stakeholder Advocate in Construction and Construction As an umbrella organisation for DAP’s Operator Programmes (OPs), promoting in governmental and non-governmental initiatives to incorporate product sustainability requirements and building and construction LCA into legislation and standards, minimising trade barriers.
- Quality Manager for verified product data. Support sustainable building initiatives and regulation in decarbonization, circularity, and other aspects, through the continuous development of communication formats for LCA-based product data. Establish common quality management for EPD Programmes and support technical collaboration. Support the availability of a digital data format and exchange rules for regulatory harmonization.
- Data provider. Provide access to an open digital network that offers verified generic data as well as third-party verified average or EPD-specific data, all from a single data source.
- Facilitator of success. Provide data for building and construction LCA, in order to support the innovation of digital tools that help establish and implement the LCA methodology.
